Elizabeth Naranjo was known for her large carved intricately carved vessels. This bowl is fully carved with an avanyu (water serpent) encircling the piece. The body of the avanyu creates cloud and rain patterns. Typical of her work in clay, Elizabeth fully polished the inside of the bowl. While this was common with potters of her age, it also adds risk in term of cracking by polishing the interior of the bowl. The result, however, is dramatic as the polished interior is more visually striking than one which is matte. Elizabeth is a daughter of noted potter Pablita Chavarria and the sister of Clara Shije, Reycita Naranjo and Mary Singer. The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Elizabeth Naranjo, Santa Clara Pueblo”.
