This is a stunning large jar by Johnathan Naranjo.  It is an elegant water jar shape with a round shoulder and a slightly turned out rim.  The jar is fully polished and etched with butterflies around the shoulder.  Each butterfly is in a different position of movement.  They are surrounded by flowers.  The coloration on each butterfly is from the depth of etching into the clay!  The various depth of the blade determines the coloration from tan to light red!  The skill and precision required to make the small cuts and create detail and shading is amazing.  While the jar is striking in polish and design, it is the lid which is so dramatic.  The lid has a single butterfly in figurative form, surrounded by flowers, all of which are three-dimensional!  The butterfly wings and flowers are also all etched to create the coloration.  It is a creative and colorful piece by one of the amazing younger potters working today.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Johnathan Naranjo”.
