This is a charming lidded jar by Madeline Naranjo. She is known for her creative carved pottery. Did you know that every piece is a pinch pot? Unlike most other Pueblo potters, she does not coil build her pottery, but each piece starts out as a ball of clay and she “pinches” it into its form. This jar is carved with a skunk on each side. The skunks are facing a prayer feather and above them are cloud designs. The lid of the jar has a sculptural skunk and the stripes on its back are matte. The piece is deeply carved and very highly polished. There is a striking contrast between the polished and matte surfaces. Madeline’s designs are always innovative and beautifully executed. The bowl is signed on the bottom, ‘Madeline E. Naranjo”.
