Madeline Naranjo (b. 1916) was known for her deep carved pottery. This is an open bowl which is carved around the outside with a water serpent (avanyu). The avanyu is an important image in Santa Clara pottery, telling the story of the water serpent who saved the village from a flood. The bowl is also fully polished on the inside as all the outside design. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Madeline Naranjo”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. While Madeline no longer makes pottery, her work is certainly a classic and her legacy continues in the pottery of her granddaughter, Madeline E. Naranjo.
