$ 1,400.00

This nativity set is by Maria I. Naranjo (1919-2015).  She is considered the first potter from Santa Clara pueblo to make nacimientos (nativity) in blackware pottery.  She originally made them in the Spanish style but started making them in the traditional Indian style in the 1960s. Her figures are hand-formed and precisely stone polished.  She was a sister of Isabel Naranjo and the mother of Martha Mirabal.   This set has Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus (and cradle), an Eagle Dancer, a cow, a sheep, and a donkey. Each piece is stone polished with matte areas for the faces or horns.  The back of the eagle dancer is painted black-on-black.  It is a beautiful set.  It is signed, “Maria I. Naranjo”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
