Rose Naranjo is the matriarch of one of the amazing families at Santa Clara Pueblo.  Descendants range from Roxanne Swentzell, Jody Folwell, Susan Folwell, Johnathan Naranjo, Rose Simpson, Nora Naranjo-Morse, and many others!  It is not often that we come across her pottery. This is a piece that was purchased directly from her in the 1980s. The jar is made from micaceous clay, for which she was famous. There are dark clouds on the surface from the firing.  It is a simple but striking example of her pottery.  The piece is signed on the bottom, “Rose”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is a unique piece by this influential matriarch.

Rose Naranjo (1917-2004) married Michael Naranjo when she was 18. For the next 26 years, she lived in Taos pueblo and learned to make micaceous pottery. She is the matriarch of one of the most innovative and creative families in the Pueblo world. Her children include Michael Naranjo, Jody Folwell, Rina Swentzell, Dolly Naranjo, Nora Naranjo Morse, and 7 others. Her grandchildren include Susan Folwell, Jody Naranjo, Polly Rose Folwell, Dusty Naranjo, Roxanne Swentzell, and others. Among her great-grandchildren are Johnathan Naranjo, Rose Simpson, and other young talents. In 1994 she was named a Santa Fe Living Treasure.
