Naranjo-Garcia, Sharon – Melon Jar with 24 Ribs

6.5\"w x 6.5\"h

$ 400.00

haron Naranjo Garcia (b. 1951) is a granddaughter of Christina Naranjo.  She learned to make pottery from her grandmother and is known for her traditional style of pottery. This is a striking melon jar with 24 carved ribs.  The jar has a graceful shape with the ribs extending up to the short neck.  The difficulty in this jar is that the entire surface is fully polished, even the area between the ribs!  The jar has a rich red coloration from the firing.  Interestingly, it is always more difficult to fire a red jar than a black one!  The potter must be more careful as they fire the red pieces to avoid discoloration.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay.
