Joy “Frog Woman” Navasie was known for her white slipped pottery and classic use of design elements. She learned to make pottery from her mother, Paqua, who also used white clay and signed with a frog as a hallmark.  The white kaolin clay is a slip that is applied to the surface of the bowl and then black (bee-weed) and red clay slips are used for painting.  This jar is a classic shape with a round shoulder and a slightly turned-out rim.  The body of the jar is divided into four panels or sections of the design.  Two sections have hatchure designs with a hummingbird (hummingbird moth) design.  The other two sections have bird tail, rain, and feather patterns.  The deeper red (burgundy) colored clay is one she began using in the 1980s.  The jar was traditionally fired so there are light blushes on the surface, especially on the rim of the piece.  They definitely add to the depth of the jar in terms of coloration.  The jar is signed on the bottom with her frog hallmark.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair and some slight areas of fugitive black.
