Navasie, Joy “Frogwoman” – Bowl with Birds and Bird Tails (1980s)

7.75"w x 4"h

$ 1,100.00

Joy Navasie was known for her white slipped pottery and classic use of design elements. She learned to make pottery from her mother, Paqua, who also used the white clay and signed with a frog as a hallmark.  The white kaolin clay is a slip that is applied to the surface of the bowl and then black (bee-weed) and red clay slips are used for painting.  This jar is one of her classic bowl shapes with a flat top. The top is painted with a series of birds.  Below the shoulder are bird tails and bird wings.  The bowl was traditionally fired so there are color variations on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom with her frog hallmark.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It was originally purchased directly from her by an Arizona collector.
