Navasie, Joy “Frogwoman” – Jar with Bird Wings and Rain Designs (1980s)

4.75"w x 5"h

$ 850.00

Joy Navasie was known for her white slipped pottery and classic use of design elements. She learned to make pottery from her mother, Paqua, who also used the white clay and signed with a frog as a hallmark.  The white kaolin clay is a slip that is applied to the surface of the bowl and then black (bee-weed) and red clay slips are used for painting.  This jar is a classic shape for her pottery with a high shoulder and a short neck.  It resembles a small storage jar.  The jar has four panels of design, painted with bee-weed and highlighted with a burgundy red clay slip. The deep red is indicative of her pottery from the 1980s and onward.  This jar is tightly painted with swirling birds and rain designs.  They are intricately connected and flow across the surface.  It was traditionally fired so there are VERY slight color variations on the surface.  The jar is signed on the bottom with her frog hallmark.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
