Ortiz, Janice – Monos Figure

13"w x 16"h

$ 1,200.00

Janice Ortiz is a sister of noted potter Virgil Ortiz.  This is one of her traditional “monos” figures.  The monos figures were originally created at Cochiti Pueblo in the 1880’s and were a type of “social commentary” reflecting the changes in Pueblo society.  Today, potters such as Janice and Virgil both use the figures as their own reflection of commenting on society and art.  This figure is a traditional style with classic Cochiti style cloud and rain patterns painted on the body.  Janice is a traditionalist looking to keep the older styles alive in her art form.  The figure is coil built and painted with native clay slips and wild spinach plant for the black.  It is traditionally fired.  The piece is signed on the bottom.
