Janice Ortiz is a sister of noted potter Virgil Ortiz and a daughter of Seferina Ortiz. She is known for her amazing figurative pottery. This piece is one of her few vessels. It is a water jar shape. The jar has a flower design around the neck. Around the body of the piece are three birds: a quail, a turkey, and a pheasant. Each bird is detailed in designs. They are painted with wild spinach (black) and red clay, on a white clay background. It creative use of shape and design. The jar is signed on the bottom, “M. J. Ortiz”.

Janice Ortiz is a daughter of Seferina and Guadalupe Ortiz and the sister of Inez, Joyce and Virgil Ortiz. Janice is known for her figurative pottery, especially her directional figures. She has won numerous awards for her pottery at Santa Fe Indian Market. She continues to use traditional clay and firing techniques on her pottery.
