Ortiz, Virgil – Corn Plant and Cochiti Designs Tile

5" x 5.5"

$ 625.00

This is one of a series of tiles Virgil Ortiz made in 2005.  This tile has a corn plant on one side and the rest is a sun pattern made up of various traditional designs.  From the corner eminating outward are a band of wild spinach plants, water, sun and sun rays.  The corn is a symbol of prosperity. There is also Virgil’s signature “Turkey track” which looks like an “x”.  The tile has been traditionally fired and uses native clay, native clay slips and wild spinach (the black).  The piece is signed on the back. The use of traditional and contemporary imagery has become a standard for Virgil’s pottery as he pushes the boundaries of contemporary Native clay.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
