This is an iconic water jar by Virgil Ortiz.  It is designed with one of his classic “tattoo” design vessels. The jar is from 2004 and it was featured in the book, “Free Spirit” on p. 91.  It was also part of the exhibition in the Netherlands in 2005.  The jar is a water jar shape, coil-built and thin-walled.  The piece is fully painted with large graphic patterns.  The designs flow and weave across the surface of the piece.  The imagery is both modern and ancient.  The piece is painted with wild spinach (a plant) for the black and the cream and red are natural clay slips.  The jar is dynamic in appearance and has great provenance.  Not as well that there is a space on the rim of the neck where it is unpainted, which is the “heartline”, which Virgil always paints on his clay vessels.  The jar is signed on the bottom “Virgil Ortiz”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
