Ortiz, Virgil – Miniature Jar with Cloud Designs (1992)
Virgil Ortiz is known for his innovative style of Cochiti pottery. This jar is from 1992 and while it is small, it is very intricately painted in design. The jar has a classic Cochiti style cloud pattern around the neck. Amazingly, there are eight cloud patterns. Below is a checkerboard snow design and then additional rainclouds. The jar is painted with wild spinach (a plant) and traditionally fired. The rim of the jar has the traditional “spirit line” which is Virgil’s way of paying tribute to the traditions of Cochiti pottery. It is signed on the bottom, “Virgil Ortiz”. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
