Ortiz, Virgil – Miniature Jar with Wild Spinach Plant Designs (1997)

2.5"w x 2.5"h

$ 800.00

Virgil Ortiz is known for his innovative style of Cochiti pottery. This jar is from 1997 and it is one of the smallest pieces we have ever had of his work.  The jar is a classic Cochiti shape with high shoulders and a slight neck.  The jar has a rain design and wild spinach plant pattern around the shoulder.  The “wild spinach” is the plant used to paint the black on the pottery.  At the base is also a cloud and rain design.  The rim of the jar has the traditional “spirit line” which is Virgil’s way of paying tribute to the traditions of Cochiti pottery.  The jar is made from native clay and painted with native clays and wild spinach (black).  It has been traditionally fired outside.  It is signed on the bottom with his name and cypher.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
