Ortiz, Virgil – Traditional Jar with Corn & Wildflower Designs

9\"w x 8\"h

$ 3,200.00

Virgil Ortiz is known for his innovative style of Cochiti pottery. This jar is one of his more traditional pieces.  It is a classic shape with the round body, the slight neck and the turned out rim.  The rim of the jar has the traditional “spirit line” which is Virgil’s way of paying tribute to the traditions of Cochiti pottery.  The jar is made from native clay and painted with native clays and wild spinach (black).  It has been traditionally fired outside. The jar has the classic corn designs and wild flower spiked patterns.  Virgil has taken these traditional designs and given them his own spin.  Note the red “sun” as part of the design as the jar is turned.  It is signed on the bottom.
