Ortiz, Virgil – Traditional Jar with Rain and Cloud Designs (1990)

5.5"w x 4.25"h

$ 875.00

This is one of the earliest pieces we have had by Virgil Ortiz.  The jar is from 1990 when he was just starting making pottery.  The jar is coil built and painted with wild spinach (black) and red clay slips.  The designs are inspired by historic Cochiti pottery.  There are cloud and rain designs around the body of the jar. The neck has a wild spinach plant design.  The jar was traditionally fired and it is signed on the bottom.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. The use of traditional and contemporary imagery has become a standard for Virgil’s pottery as he pushes the boundaries of contemporary Native clay.
