3.25"w x 3.5"h

$ 1,000.00

Virgil Ortiz is known for his innovative style of Cochiti pottery. This jar is one of his earlier, smaller vessels. The jar is a classic Cochiti shape with high shoulders and a slight neck. The jar is designed with corn designs near the base and clouds and rain near the neck.  Note the use of the red clay slip in the center of the clouds. Virgil has taken these traditional designs and given them his own spin.It is  made from native clay and painted with native clays and wild spinach (black).  It has been traditionally fired outside.  The rim of the jar has the traditional “spirit line” which is Virgil’s way of paying tribute to the traditions of Cochiti pottery.  Note as well the rain and cloud designs on the base of the jar!   It is signed on the bottom, “V. O.”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
