This is jar by Robert Patricio brings to life historic Acoma patterns.  He is known for his classic forms and use of both traditional and pre-historic imagery.  This jar is coil built and thin-walled. It has a classic water jar shape with a high shoulder and a sloping neck.  The jar is painted with a very traditional Rain Bird design.  The birds extend down from the rim and are the circular pattern with the attached hatchwork imagery.  The base has the “sunset” red and there is the terraced mesa pattern.  The neck of the jar has a corrugated “loop” pattern, which is often seen on Acoma pottery in the 1930-50 period.  The last photo are images of the jar in process.  It shows it being painted with bee-weed (black) and the red slip being applied.  It is interesting to see how the colors change when the piece is fired!  The jar is signed on the bottom, “R. M. Patricio”.
