This is a very traditional water jar by Robert Patricio.  This jar has a high shoulder and a short neck.  The jar is painted with bee-weed and different clay slips.  The jar has four tumbling hummingbirds as the design.  You can see the small beaks and the wings are rounded and have tiny “clouds” on them.  The center of each has a cloud and rain design.  It is a creative design that uses the white space to accentuate the birds and wings.  The base is painted with red clay.  It is signed on the bottom, “R.  M.  Patricio”.  The jar is an exciting extension of his artistry in clay and continues the amazing Acoma legacy.   

Robert said recently of his pottery:

““The pottery inspires me to keep going.  Keeping the tradition alive in making pottery, that’s how we were brought up.  Our ancestors started making pottery.  It’s amazing what comes of a piece of clay. When you come to Acoma it’s peacuful and quite.  When you look a piece of pottery, you see the same peacefulness.”   Robert Patricio, 2020

Robert Patricio

Robert is the son of Doris Patricio and the brother of Doug, Israel, and Myron Patricio.  His great-grandfather was Santiago Zieu, and his grandmother was Helen Zieu Patricio (1911-1983).  His great-aunt was Marie Z. Chino.  His aunt (cousin) was Grace Chino, who taught him to make pottery.  Robert is known for his traditionally built vessels and for using traditional shapes and designs.  He has won numerous awards for his pottery, including "Best of Pottery" at Santa Fe Indian Market in 2010 and 2022!  Each piece is coil-built and painted with clay slips and bee weed (black).  Robert says he signs his "RM Patricio" pieces for Robert Marcus Patricio.
