Patricio, Robert – Water Jar with Double Rainbow Design

10"w x 8.25"h

$ 1,200.00

This water jar by Robert Patricio is one which he was featured making and painting in his recent iColores movie short, which can be seen below.  The jar is made from traditional Acoma clay and then painted with bee-weed (black) and two different red clay slips.  Robert said of this jar in the video:

“Mother Earth is the whole pottery itself.  This is an old-style design.  It is a rainbow and anything inside with squares is cornfields.  After it rains, then it shines over the cornfields.  It’s like saying ‘Let me write a letter.  I’m going to draw a painting on my pottery. That’s my letter to mother earth to bring rain here.’ I’m doing my job by passing on the tradition.”

The design flows across the surface of the piece with rainbows around the fields. The rainbows alternate red and brown in coloration.  In the center are plant designs.  The base is red clay.  It is signed on the bottom, “R.  M.  Patricio”.  It is a great piece of history and provenance to have the actual jar he was working on for iColores!  The last group of photos are from both the movie and also ones I took during the day of the filming at Robert’s house on Acoma.
