Pedro, Leah – “Teaching Jar” (11 years old)

5.5"w x 5"h

$ 600.00

Leah Pedro is a granddaughter of Frederica Antonio. This jar is coil built and painted with bee-weed.  Frederica brought it in and called it the “teaching jar”.  She had made a piece in a similar shape and worked with Leah on how to paint the complex checkerboard pattern.  See the last photo for the comparison of the two!  The designs are painted on in vertical then horizontal lines.  The hatchwork patterns are then filled in to create small squares.  The jar has a wing pattern encircling the piece.  The inside of the rim is painted with a “sunrise red” coloration.  The base of the jar is concave, reminiscent of historic Acoma jars that were carried on the head.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Leah Pedro, 11 Years Old).  It is great to see this important tradition and style passed down to another generation!
