This is a unique red bowl by Juanita Pena. The bowl is a classic shape with a sharp edge.  It is polished red and painted with a red clay slip for the outline of the avanyu (water serpent).  The matte area is an additional red clay slip painted onto the clay before firing.  The early red pieces were typically painted with a red-on-red style as opposed to the later buff-on-red.  The bowl is from the late 1920’s.  It is in very good condition with  no cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Juanita”.   Juanita created some truly exceptional early pottery with innovative designs, great condition and a wonderful history.
