Peynetsa, Anderson – Jar with Five Heartline Deer and Fluted Rim
This is a large olla by Anderson Peynetsa. The jar is a beautiful shape with a high shoulder and a fluted rim. The high shoulder allows all the deer to be seen as part of the design. The body of the jar is slipped with white clay and then painted with five heartline deer. Each deer is very tightly painted and they are stylized with thin legs. The heartline deer is a classic image in Zuni pottery, with the heart representing the strength and spirit of the animal. The base and rim of the jar are slipped with black clay. It is an elegant and striking vessel. The jar on the bottom, “A. Peynetsa”.
