Dextra Quostkuyva Nampeyo is certainly one of the most influential Hopi-Tewa potters of the last 50 years. Not only did she teach numerous potters (Steve Lucas, Yvonne Lucas, Les Namingha, Loren Ami, Hisi Nampeyo, to name just a few), but her creative designs and forms changed have dramatically influenced the pottery itself.  This is a classic bowl by Dextra and it is painted with bee-weed and two different colors of red clay.  The design is a bird design that is inspired by the pottery of Nampeyo of Hano. The bird is tightly painted with small, thinly lined designs.  There are sections with polished red that accent the design of the bird.  as the bowl is turned, there is a larger section of red design that extends outward from the rim.  As well, there is open space of the bowl, which is typical of her pottery style of painting.  Dextra would often leave open areas of the clay to “speak for themselves”.  The piece was traditionally fired which created the blushes on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom, “Dextra” and a corn plant for her being Corn Clan.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. Simple, elegant, and a classic!
