Red Starr, Ivan – Seedpot with Sunface and Dancer (1991)

2.5"w x 2.25"h

Ivan Red Starr was a son of noted potters Red Starr (Sioux) and Harriet Tafoya (Santa Clara). His pieces were made as traditional Santa Clara pottery in terms of shape and polish. The designs combined a variety of imagery from Sioux to Santa Clara to other styles.  This small bowl is highly polished and fully designed.  There is a Hopi Hilili Katsina on one side and a sunface on the other.  They are separated by four feathers etched into the clay on either side.  The bowl is signed, “Ivan” and was made in 1991.  The “10” may signify that it was his 10th piece. He was only 22 when he made this piece, which is amazingly well polished and etched!  I’ve only seen 2 others, which were both more cylinder in shape and smaller.  However, I didn’t take pictures of the signatures.  It is in excellent condition and definitely unique to the history of Santa Clara pottery!
