Romero, Susan “Snowflake” – Seedpot with Antelope Dancers and Butterfly (1980s)

2.25"w x 2.5

$ 575.00

Susan “Snowflake” Romero’s pottery is highly polished and intricately etched with detailed imagery.  Many of her skills are ones that she learned from her father, Joseph Lonewolf. This seedpot is fully polished and fully designed.  On this piece, all the etching was done before the piece was fired.  On the top is a stylized butterfly.  On the sides, there are three Mimbres-style Antelop dancers.  What is amazing about this piece are all the layers of etching! There is the polished layer, then a matte layer with a series of geometric designs that are just behind the figures. Finally, there is the backround incised matte area with vertically etched lines.  The matte designs are unusual and difficult to create, but very visually effective to enhance the design!  In person, the seedpot is striking in appearance and complexity. The piece is signed on the bottom in the clay with her Tewa name, “Pho-sa-We”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
