Roybal, Tonita – Bowl with Rain Designs (1920’s)

4.25"w x 2"h

$ 400.00

This is an exceptional early bowl by Tonita Roybal.  It is from the early 1920’s.  This was a period when she would still fully polish the bottom of her pottery and then sign into the clay.  Later, she would leave the base unpolished but the signature would still be signed into the clay.  The bowl is fully polished and it is an interesting shape with a very sharp shoulder which is a signature of her work.  It’s surprising on a piece this size that the shoulder can feel so pronounced!  The design is a series of rain and cloud pattern which encircle the piece.  The bowl is signed, “Tonita”.  The bowl actually appears to be signed twice in the clay. When looked at under a light, there is a second “Tonita” signature in the clay as well!  The bowl is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
