Stunning!  Tonita Roybal is one of the great innovative names in San Ildefonso pottery.  This jar is one of Tonita’s famous shapes.  Is has a sharp shoulder and a sloping side to the piece.  The entire surface is fully polished and it is painted from the shoulder to the rim.  The design is a mountain pattern alternating with fine-line rain and cloud motifs.  The use of negative space as the design is one of the key elements in her pottery art.  The jar is fired to a near-gunmetal coloration.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Tonita”.  It is her signature style from the early 1920s.  The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
