Roybal, Tonita – Large Jar with Feather Design (1920’s)

This is an extraordinary large jar by Tonita Roybal.  She remains one of the great innovative names in San Ildefonso pottery.  This large jar reflects the exceptional nature of her pottery designs, shapes, and firing.  The jar has a very round shoulder and short neck.  It’s is fully polished and painted with design elements which accentuate the shape.  There are large feathers extending down from the rim. There are additional mountain and rain designs.  Around the shoulder are oval sun and rain designs.  There is an interesting flow of design and form on this jar.  It is highly polished and fired a deep black coloration. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  It is signed, “Tonita” in the clay on the bottom.
