Roybal, Tonita – Long Neck Jar with Mountain and Rain Designs (1920’s)

7.75"w x 11.75"h

$ 3,200.00

Tonita Roybal remains one of the great innovative names in San Ildefonso pottery.  This jar is a larger and elegant shape.  It has a round shoulder and an elongated neck.  The jar has a cloud, rain, and bird wing design around the shoulder and a mountain design around the neck. It is tightly painted. The jar is fired to an amazing gunmetal coloration. This is a result of the heat of the firing which creates a silvery-metallic-colored surface.  The jar is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Tonita”.  It is from the early 1920s.  Interestingly, on the bottom, there is an original price tag for $5.00!  As well, the other small stickers are all from Dick Howard and his collection.  He would number each piece in his collection and that is the “5144”.  Just great provenance.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
