Sahme, Jean – 12″ Tall Jar with Sikyatki Birds (1990s)

5"w x 12"h

$ 2,200.00

Jean Sahme is a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. This tall jar is coil built, thin-walled, and painted with bee-weed and red clay slips.  This jar has straight sides and a short neck.  This is a difficult form to create to have the sides remain straight and even.  There are four large birds painted onto the surface of the jar.  The birds are tightly painted and accented with polished red sections.  The jar was traditionally fired to create the blushes on the surface.  The jar is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  It is signed on the bottom with her signature fish and corn plant for Corn Clan.  This large jar is certainly Jean at her very best in terms of both size and complexity of the design.  While Jean no longer makes pottery, there is wonderful creativity in each of her pieces!
