Sahme, Jean – Tall Jar with Double Butterfly Maiden

5"w x 8"h

$ 1,800.00

Jean Sahme is a daughter of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano. This tall jar is a classic Hopi-Tewa canister shape with a high shoulder and a short neck.  The jar is fully polished and painted with bee-weed and clay slips. There is a full figure Butterfly Maiden on each side.  The large tablita has red polished areas, as does her dress and moccasins.  Separating the two figures is a Hopi sash that is different on each side.  The sash weaves around the sides and it is polished red and painted with bee-weed (black) for the designs.  The jar was traditionally fired which created the blushes on the surface.  It is signed on the bottom with her hallmark fish and corn plant for Corn Clan (a descendant of Nampeyo of Hano).  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  While Jean no longer makes pottery, there is wonderful creativity in each of her pieces!
