Sahmie, Randall – Koshari Clown Box and Rattle

3"w x 6"h

$ 550.00

Randall Sahmie (b. 1950) is a son of noted potter Priscilla Nampeyo and a brother of Nyla, Rachel, Jean and Bonnie Sahmie.  His pottery often includes wood katsinas or ladders. This is a very unusual piece as it is both a clay box and a rattle! The piece is formed from clay and the sides are painted with stylized Hopi-Tewa designs from corn to shawls.  The top of the box is coiled in the shape of a Koshari clown. Inside the box, there are small clay beads, which make a sound when the piece is moved or shaken!  It was traditionally fired.  The piece is both unusual and charming.  It is signed on the bottom, “R. Sahmie”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
