Desideria Montoya Sanchez was a sister of noted potter Maria Martinez. She was known for her traditional pottery and the use of both classic and innovative designs. This bowl is painted with a fascinating series of designs. There are clouds painted with the half circles and a center “rain” line. Separating them are clouds over the mountains. However, the composition of the jar and the contrasting of the polished and matte surfaces gives the piece a very modernist appearance. It is fascinating to see how Desideria’s pottery is easily differentiated from that of Maria in both shape and design. The bowl was fired a dark black coloration. It is in good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Desideria”.
