Sanchez, Kathy “Wan Povi” – Large Black & Sienna Jar with Avanyu, Koshari and Feather Desigsn

6"w x 6"h

$ 775.00

This is certainly one of the largest and most intricate pieces we have seen by Kathy “Wan Povi” Sanchez (b. 1950).  Kathy is a great-great-granddaughter of Maria Martinez and a sister of Barbara Gonzales.  This larger jar has a sharp shoulder and a sloping neck.  The entire piece is fully polished to a very high shine.  Around the shoulder, there are sgraffito designs.  There is an avanyu (water serpent) with an inset piece of turquoise.  Then there are four feathers followed by a scene with flowers and a koshari clown. The flowers each have an inset piece of turquoise. Over the koshari is a rainbow and then a cloud and plant design.  The rim and various parts of the design have been “two-toned” sienna in coloration.  Below the shoulder are evergreen and insect designs lightly etched into the clay.  The jar is signed, “Wan Povi” on the bottom.  While Kathy makes little pottery today, the technical expertise of her shape, polish, and design are certainly evident.  The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.
