Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery.  Each piece is coil-built, stone-polished, and traditionally fired.  The shape of this jar was inspired by the work of Russell’s great-aunt, Rose Gonzales.  The cylindrical shape of this jar is inspired by historic San Ildefonso boxes. The piece is round and fully polished.  It is etched with cloud, rain, and bear paw designs before firing.  The jar has a bear lid that is also fully polished.  The back of the bear is etched with a starburst pattern  The box and lid were both fired a glassy black.  After the firing, the back of the bear was two-toned sienna and then inset with a single piece of turquoise. The bear has tiny diamond eyes!  The rim of the lid is inset with pieces of turquoise.  The cannister has two rows of inset turquoise stones.  There are also three rows of inset hematite hei-shi beads . The cannister has a near-gunmetal glassy appearance from the firing.  In total, there are 147 inset stones.  The jar and bear are both signed, “Russell ’25”.
