Sanchez, Russell – Bowl with Avanyu and Waterfall Rim

6"w x 4"h

$ 8,800.00

This is a complex bowl by Russell Sanchez.  The bowl is coil built and the rim is turned downward instead of upward. This adds to the difficulty of making the piece having it survive drying, carving, polishing, and firing!  The entire piece is highly polished.  Around the shoulder is an incised avanyu (water serpent).  There is a piece of turquoise on the horn of the avanyu.  Note as well the little bear paw near the head of the water serpent!  The top of the bowl has two bands of turquoise hei-shi beads with a band of copper leafing.  There are 44 inset hematite stones in the center of the copper leafing!  However, it is the rim that is amazing.  It is fully polished and turns inward. There is a water design on the edge of the rim. If you reach into the bowl, you can actually feel that it even turns inward at the very edge!  Amazing!  Below the avanyu are two inset bands of hematite hei-shi beads.  All the stones, hei-shi beads, and copper leafing are added after the firing.. The bowl is signed on the bottom, “Russell”.
