Sanchez, Russell – Large Black and Red Bowl with Bear Lid (1990)

6.5"w x 7.25"h (w/ lid)

$ 5,500.00

Russell Sanchez has long been one of the great innovators in Pueblo pottery.  This piece is from 1990.  The rim of the bowl is carved in a series of half-circles and the top half is polished red. The bottom half is matte-black. Separating them is a row of turquoise hei-shi beads.  The bowl has a bear lid that sits on the curves of the rim!  Note the style of the bear lid from this time, with the turned head and the incised area around the eyes.  There are inset pieces of turquoise for the eyes of the bear.  The piece is signed, ‘Russell Sanchez”.  It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  There is a tiny bit of wear on the edge of each rounded section where the lid sits, which is not unexpected.
