Sanchez, Russell – Red & Black Box with Bear Lid
Russell Sanchez continues to be one of the true innovators in Pueblo pottery. Each piece is perfectly coil built, stone polished and etched. This is a classic round “box” which is fully polished, even on the inside! The base and rim are black clay, as is the inside of the piece. The deep red clay is etched with a sun and old style avanyu design. Note the use of the clouds above the avanyu. The lid is a bear with incised clouds. The lid is polished a deep red. The piece is traditionally fired and the coloration is striking. The concept of the “black and red” is a reflection of earlier San Ildefonso pottery from the late 1800’s which was black-on-red. This piece has two rows of hematite hei-shi beads. It is signed on the bottom.
