This is an intricately designed jar by Russell Sanchez. The jar has a low shoulder and sloping sides. The piece is polished a deep red coloration. There is an avanyu etched around the shoulder of the jar. There are 46 hematite stones around the top of the shoulder and 67 small pieces of turquoise. Together, there are 134 inset stones, along with 2 rows of turquoise hei-shi. The jar has a small bear lid with additional inset stones. The bear is highly polished red and the base of the lid is black matte. It is a striking use of color and contrast of red polished and black matte areas. The jar was traditionally fired to a glassy red coloration. The jar and the lid are both signed on the bottom in the clay, “Russell”. A wonderful traditional and yet very modern piece!
