Sarracino, Myron – Four Color Jar with Rainclouds, Lightning, and Longhair Katsinas

8.5"w x 8.5"h

$ 700.00

Myron Sarracino is one of the few Laguna potters working today.  He learned to make pottery from Gladys Paquin and creates pieces that are thin-walled and tightly painted. This jar is one of the more intricate pieces we have had of his work.  It has a round shoulder and sloping neck.  Around the neck are rainclouds and four Longhair Katsinas.  Longhair katsinas are meant to bring rain and their long beard to represent the rain.  Below the kastinam is a rainbow band of black, white, dark red, and orange-red. The two colors are natural clay slips.  There is a band of interlocking lightning and near the base another rainbow design. Finally, near the base are cloud designs.  The jar is fully designed and complex in imagery.  There is a strong balance of designs from the rim to the base in terms of color and creative continuity of the story on the jar.  Note on the rim that there is a  painted “spirit line”, which is where the “spirit” of the painter is able to leave the piece and it is also a tribute to the potters who came before.  It is seen on much older Acoma and Laguna pottery.  The jar is signed on the bottom, “Myron Sarracino”.
