Shupla, Helen – Jar with Lightning Designs (1970s)
Helen Shupla is certainly most famous for her exceptional melon jars. However, she is also known for her creative carved vessels. This jar is carved with nine sections of lightning designs. The jar is highly polished red and the background area is the traditional Santa Clara cream clay slip. The jar was traditionally fired. Did you know that her husband, Kenneth Shupla, was from Hopi and he carved all of her pottery! As a result, Helen’s carved pieces often have designs that seem both Hopi and Pueblo. The jar is from the 1970s. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Helen Santa Clara Pueblo”. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
