Shutiva, Stella – Jar with Interlocking Butterfly Design (1977)

8.75"w x 5.5"h

$ 575.00

Stella Shutiva was renowned for her corrugated pottery.  Her style was inspired by pre-historic style corrugated vessels.  However, she also created exceptional traditional painted vessels. This jar has an interlocking butterfly pattern.  Each butterfly has its wings connected to the one next to it.  The jar was traditionally fired so there is some variation to the coloration of the white.  The base is slipped with red clay to create the sunrise band.  It is signed on the bottom, “S. Shutiva”.  The jar is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair.  There are a few small areas of spalling, which are not unusual in this period of Acoma pottery.  Interestingly, there is one of her business cards which is included with the jar!
