Small, Mary – Large Polychrome Jar with Raised Cloud Rim and Turquoise (1980s)

Mary Small (b. 1940) is known for her traditional Jemez pottery.  It is not just her painting, which is distinctive, but the gray-colored clay that she uses is distinctive to her pottery.  This jar has a round shoulder and a sloping neck. The rim has a raised band with painted rain and cloud designs.  Around the body of the ajr har large star patterns.  Each has a piece of turquoise. Two fo the stone are large and two are smaller. The piece has a striking coloration from the white, gray, and firing.  It is signed on the bottom, “Mary Small”.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
