Suazo, Candelaria – Large Black & Sienna Bowl with Avanyu, Hummingbird & Butterfly
Candelaria Suazo is a daughter of potters Joe and Santanita Suazo. Her sisters include Martha Suazo (the wife of Art Cody Haungooah), Margie Naranjo, Mae Tapia, and Shirley Duran. She learned to make pottery from her mother. This is one of her larger pieces. It is a wide shape with a sharp shoulder. The bowl is fully polished and fired a deep black. it is etched into the clay on the top with a larger butterfly, hummingbird, quail, and flute player. They are surrounded by a large avanyu design that includes rain, cloud, and wind patterns. The background area that was etched away has been etched in a vertical manner, which adds an additional dimension to the bowl. Below the shoulder are a few small areas of etched cloud and feather designs. It is signed on the bottom, “Candelaria Suazo”.
