Suina, Ada – Storyteller Drummer (1980s)

7.5" long x 9"h

Ada Suina (b. 1930) is a daughter of Berina and Eluterio Cordero, and sister to Stephanie C. Rhoades (Snowflake Flower). Her maternal grandmother, Estefanita Herrera, inspired her to become a potter, and her cousin, Virginia Naranjo, taught her how to make pottery.  Ada is well known for her storytellers.  She uses all-natural materials and fires the figurines outdoors in the traditional manner.  This is one of her Grandfather Drummers.  The piece intricately painted and he is holding a leather drum stick and a wooden drum.  It is very intricately painted on the back of the shirt and sleeves.  Note as well that the legs are not flat, but have a slight bend in them at the knee. This is something she did on her earlier pieces but it was much more difficult and so the later work all has flat legs.  The piece is signed, “Ada Suina” on the bottom.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.  Definitely a classic from one of the important Cochiti storyteller artists!
