Tafoya, Agapita – Bowl with Carved Avanyu (1940s)

4.75"w x 2.75"h

$ 575.00

This is a unique carved bowl by Agapita Tafoya.  She was the wife of noted potter Camilio Tafoya and the mother of Grace Medicine Flower and Joseph Lonewolf. Agapita created most of her pottery from the 1930s to the early 1950s. This bowl is from the 1940s and it is deeply carved and stone polished. What is unique is the design.  It is the feathered water serpent used by Camilio and their family.  While I have seen other pieces of hers with an avanyu, this is the only one we have had with a carved avanyu.  As well, it has the feathers extending backward, as seen in the pottery of Camilio, Joseph Lonewolf, and Grace Medicine Flower   The bowl is fired a deep black.  It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Agapita Tafoya”.  The bowl is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair.
