Tafoya, Agapita – Bowl with Carved Avanyu (1940’s)

5.25"w x 3"h

$ 450.00

This is an exceptional carved bowl by Agapita Tafoya.  She was the wife of noted potter Camilio Tafoya and the mother of Grace Medicine Flower and Joseph Lonewolf. Agapita created most of her pottery from the 1930’s to the early 1950’s. This bowl is from the 1950’s and it is deeply carved and stone polished. The design is an avanyu which encircles the bowl.  Note how the shape of the horn is unusual as well as how the body of the avanyu is connected to the rain clouds on the top and bottom.  The piece is fully polished and fired red.  The recessed area has a cream colored slip which was used for contrast with the red clay slip.  The bowl is in good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration or repair. It is signed on the bottom in the clay, “Agapita Tafoya”.
